STEP at Old Westbury is dedicated to increasing the number of underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students participating in STEM.

What We Do

 

We empower Long Island students (grade 7–12) to discover their potential in science and tech.


Local Schools Served:
Our program proudly hosts students from the Westbury, Baldwin, Freeport, and Uniondale school districts, as well as other exceptional regional schools.

We provide cost-free* pre-college educational programming to prepare our kids to succeed beyond high school.

Our Program

STEP at Old Westbury is made possible in large part by the Science and Technology Entry Program grant from the NY State Department of Education.

 

About STEP

Established in 1986, the Science and Technology Entry Program of NY State provides historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students with pre-college educational support. SUNY at Old Westbury has proudly hosted the STEP program since 1996.


Activities and Opportunities

Our program consists of both academic year and summer session components including:

  • Core subject instruction and enrichment

  • Supervised research training by a faculty member specialized in their field

  • College admissions prep

  • Standardized test preparation: SAT and Regents

  • Scholarship opportunities

  • Career awareness and development activities & workshops

  • College credit courses (please inquire about availability)

  • And more…

Other STEP at Old Westbury activities include:

  • Conference and research presentation skills building

  • Internships related to medicine, mentoring, and STEM education

  • Community service and outreach projects

  • Character and leadership development activities, including STEP Leadership Fellows

  • College tours

  • Career exploration and expert panels

Eligibility Requirements

Our program exists to provide students who identify as underrepresented minorities (and/or economically disadvantaged) in STEM fields and licensed professions with pre-college educational support. To qualify for STEP, a student must meet the requirements prescribed by the New York State Department of Education.

Enrollment

Our program is continually rolling admissions unless specified.

  • 2024 - 2025 Academic Year: July 1st, 2024 through June 30th, 2025, on set Saturdays, with various courses and class times. Click here to see the course builder and the class calendar. Use the link below to request an application. Once you’ve submitted the form, you will receive the complete application package, which must be filled out in full to be considered for the program.
